Here's some lingo it's useful to know if you're a RPer:
Tell me if there's anything I missed, and I'll add it to the main post.
- RP = A roleplay. A roleplay is a story which others can participate in, writing only the actions of their own character(s). The author of the RP provides the basis of the story while the ones who join that RP help make the plot.
- RPer = Roleplayer
- RPing = Roleplaying
- Charrie = A character
- OC = Original Character
- OOC = Out of Character, as in you're speaking as yourself and not writing the actions of your character. (Note: There are other ways of indicating an OOC part, some examples being brackets of any kind; double brackets of any kind; or simply bolding the text, italicizing the text, or making the text bigger. There's no need to write OOC if you are not in a Roleplay forum.)
- IC = In Character, used sometimes to indicate when you're writing the actions of your character again after an OOC post or part of your post.
- Thread = A dicussion consisting of the main post and all the posts after it. All these posts are linked, hence the name "thread".
- Skelly = Short for "skeleton", a skelly is the system used to introduce and describe your character. A simple skelly would look something like this:Name:
Gender:
Age:
Personality:
Looks:
To make your character, you simply fill in the spaces with your character's information.
- God-Modding or Godmodding (GM) = When you write the actions of another person's character in your post. This is not allowed unless you have the permission of the other player. Sometimes it's hard to get around this, but try to avoid it as much as possible. (Ex. Write "Billy swung his fist at Sam's jaw, trying to knock him out" instead of "Billy punched Sam in the face, causing him to fall to the ground")
- Power-Playing or Powerplaying (PP) = When your character is so powerful they are almost invincible, or when an event that would probably severely hurt the character has little to no effect on them. Powerplaying is not fair is is not allowed, and although it is a little bit of an abiguous concept, try to be as realistic as possible with your characters. Even if it is a fantasy roleplay, all people have flaws.
- Mary-Sues = Characters with no depth, ie. a character that has no flaws and/or always has one emotion or does not exhibit a range of emotions. Although Mary-Sues are technically allowed, having a Mary-Sue character just makes you a bad writer. Sorry.
- SU = Sign Up
- SUT = Sign Up Thread, a thread used to provide the basis of the story and the characters' skeletons. These threads help keep RPs clean and organized, where the information for the story is in one place while the actual story is in another. When applying for a RP, post your character in the SU thread, or SUT.
Tell me if there's anything I missed, and I'll add it to the main post.
