Nightpaw's ears flatened in annoyance when Smoke appeared. He had found them. He relaxed however, when Smoke seemed to be friendly. He got off his friend and listened to him converse with the stranger. He caught Amberpaw's look and cleared his throat. "We were just making sure you were really leaving." He said trying to act tough. "You have a nest around here somewhere?" He tried to ask indifferently, however he couldn't mask the curiousity in his voice.

Smoke laughed at Nightpaw, the apprentice being much younger than he. "Even if I did," Smoke said, "why would I tell you?" It was true he had been resting in the roots of a tree nearby, but it was hardly a nest - he was a wanderer, never sleeping in the same place from day to day. "Well, I've left, and I have no desire to go back to your land. You've got what you need, so go." Part of him hoped the two would force him to go back to their clan with them, and part of him wanted them to just go away so this whole clan business would be over and he could go back to his normal life. What was wrong with him? He'd never wanted to be a part of a family since... well, since he was abandoned by his owners. He allowed himself to dwell on it for a moment before snapping out of it. "Now, if you'll excuse me," he said, and began to turn away. Amberpaw looked from the rogue to Nightpaw and back, knowing his friend's curiosity wasn't satisfied quite yet.

Nightpaw frowned knowing Smoke was right; why would the loner tell him anything? He watched as the cat began to leave, but he quickly ran in front of him, stopping him in his path. "Hey, we're not done here!" As always, Nightpaw's curiousity was not satisfied. "As futures warrior of Fernclan I demand youanswer us!" He hissed trying to look threatening.

Smoke stopped. His patience was thinning, but he was also slightly amused by the apprentice trying to look threatening. "What, you want me to tell you where my nest is?" he laughed bitterly. "Or are you simply not done harassing me because I intruded on your land." Amber paw was becoming increasingly distressed by the situation. "Hey, Nightpaw," he said, "maybe we should leave him alone..."

Nightpaw really wasn't sure what he wanted from the tom. He had questions, but didn't know how to ask them. He thought about Smoke's question. "maybe both." Nightpaw's ear twitched towards Amberpaw when his friend spoke up. "I'm not leaving 'til we get some answers."

Smoke raised an eyebrow, surprised by the answer. "Answers about what?" he spat, his voice rising. "I don't have a nest and I'm not in any of your so called clans. I'm a rogue, always have been, and I can assure you that I'm never coming close to your land again." "Nightpaw..." Amberpaw warned, stepping back from the rogue. He didn't want any if them to get hurt. "I think you're just two overgrown kits trying to prove your worth by doing something dangerous," Smoke continued. "Now get out of my face or you'll regret it!" Amberpaw quickly stepped between the two, trying to diffuse Smoke's anger. "We're sorry about bothering you, we'll be leaving now," he said, glancing at his friend. "Won't we, Nightpaw?"

Nightpaw narrowed his green eyes, as his body shifted into a defensive state. He ignored Amberpaw's warnings, only focusing on the rouge in front of him. Feeling way too tough, Nightpaw responded with, "Regret it? Ha! A loner such as yourself has no skills. A newborn kit knows more about fighting than you do."

Smoke narrowed his eyes, considering attacking the apprentice. But he couldn't lower himself to such a level, he couldn't let his anger get the best of him. "Why do I even bother," he mumbled to himself, turning away. And so he began to walk into the woods, while Amberpaw tried to block Nightpaw from following. "Nightpaw, we followed him and we talked to him!" he said. "Now let's go back, we're going to be late for the clan gathering."

Nightpaw was prepared to follow the tom and continue to provoke him, when Amberpaw stepped in. He watched the cat leave before sighing. "Mousedung." He hissed before flattening his ears and turning back towards the territory, disappointment heavy on his shoulders. "No one takes us seriously Amberpaw. I can't wait until we're actually warriors." He sighed before mumbling on to himself as they walked back to camp.

"Just wait 'till we're older, Nightpaw!" Amberpaw said as they walked, trying to cheer his friend up. "Then we'll be the most feared warriors around!" He thought for a while as they plodded back through their territory. Only when they were safely back in their camp did he say anything. "Hey, do you think he actually might want to join the clan? He seemed awfully lonely. No nest, no friends - can you imagine?"

Nightpaw huffed in reply to his friend's attempt to cheer him. Why couldn't they be warriors now? They had fought in a couple battles against Ridgeclan - didn't that mean anything? Once they got back to camp, Nightpaw sat outside the apprentices' den, curling his tail over his paws. He shrugged at Amberpaw's question. "I dunno'... he seems pretty stubborn. I wonder what a rouge's life consists of." He wondered aloud.

Amberpaw flicked his tail back and forth as they waited for the clan's gathering to start. "I dunno... it's probably hard. You don't have any friends to fight with you or hunt with you or to protect you if you have kits... or to share tongues with... or just talk to..." He trailed off, but brightened up. "Maybe we should talk to Larkstar! If he wants to join the clan, then she'll rope him in faster than a hungry kit can down a mouse. Maybe he won't be as cranky then."

Nightpaw chuckled at his friend's explaination of a rouge's life. "Yes it would be very lonely. Hense the name loner." He teased. At his suggestion, Nightpaw shrugged. "I don't know Amberpaw. We're just apprentices. She might not listen to us. Plus we don't know if he's a threat or not... he never answered my questions." He mumbled the last bit under his breath.

Once Oaktail reached the camp, he found his sister and gave her a brief report on his find. She sighed in disappointment when he told her that the loner had not wished to join them but thanked him for trying. Now it was sunhigh andtime for her to resume her duties as Clan leader. Leaping up onto the calling rock, she glanced around at the cats gathered mostly below her. "All cats old enough to catch their own prey, gather beneath the Calling Rock for a clan meeting," she called out ceremoniously, curling her tail around her paws.

Nightpaw got to his paws when Larkstar called for a meeting. "We better get going." He told Amberpaw before bouncing over to the calling rock. About that time, Swiftstorm trotted out of the warriors den and took a seat beside the young apprentice. Meanwhile, Tigerheart remained in the medicine cat's den. He knew he had no place attending the meeting. Especially since he was leaning towards leaving. He shifted his injured leg, wincing at the movement. When he's leg was strong enough, he'd leave.

"Aw, finally!" Amberpaw said, bounding after his friend. "We're gonna get new mentors now, right?" He felt a twinge for his old mentor, but quickly dismissed it - that was in the past now. He sat down next to his friend, tail twitching in excitement every few seconds. Dawnlight and Silverheart quickly answered Larkstar's call, pointedly sitting on opposite sides. Dawnlight wrapped her tail around her paws calmly, while Silverheart's flicked with some unknown emotion. Slowly, Silverheart closed her eyes and opened them. Her ear twitched. She knew that now the new deputy would likely be chosen, after moons of deliberation on Larkstar's part. This decision could change the fate of the Clan, and she knew, with Larkstar's beliefs, the decision would likely be one Silverheart disliked.

Once all the cats had gathered, Larkstar gazed down upon them a moment like a proud queen upon her own kits before opening her mouth to speak. "FernClan, we have been through many trials and tribulations that StarClan saw fit to place upon us; but I know that in our hearts, we are resilient warriors who, when put to the test, can survive anything and bounce back with a vitality to the greatness we know we can achieve. There have been great losses-" she paused a moment and bowed her head at the painful memory of the bloody battle, lifting it up again after a moment "-but we can move forward from these and put the past behind us. The first step to moving forward is choosing a new deputy." She paused, remembering the words that had been uttered in clan history for so long. "I say these words before the spirit of Shrewwhisker, so that his spirit may hear and approve my choice. Swiftstorm will be the new deputy of FernClan." She had altered the words slightly, fully aware that she had superseded the time StarClan allotted for a deputy to be chosen. She gazed down proudly on her new deputy, though, and waited for the congratulations to subside. "We also have two apprentices in need of mentors. Amberpaw, please step forward. I call upon my warrior ancestors to give this apprentice a new mentor. Amberpaw, you have lost your first mentor, so your new mentor will be Oaktail. Oaktail, you have shown yourself to be a warrior of loyalty and level-headedness. I'm sure you will pass on all you know to this apprentice." Oaktail padded over to Amberpaw and touched noses with him, slightly annoyed that he had been stuck with the annoying bundle of energy, but trusting his sister all the same. Moving on, Larkstar looked to Nightpaw. "Nightpaw, please step forward. I call upon my warrior ancestors to give this apprentice a new mentor. Nightpaw, you have lost your first mentor, so your new mentor will be Silverheart. Silverheart, you have shown yourself to be a warrior of courage and determination. I'm sure you will pass all you know to this apprentice." Finished with the ceremonies, Larkstar leaped down from her position, signaling the end of the meeting.

Swiftstorm bowed her head in gratitude when Larkstar chose her as the new deputy. A mixture of honor and happiness tingled inside her. Swiftstorm, even as a young apprentice, knew that she wanted to do nothing but help and serve her clan. Now she had the pleasure of being the second in command. "Thank you." She whispered softly, and waited until the clan was quiet again to lift her head up.
Nightpaw watched anxiously as his friend was given a mentor. When Larkstar addressed him, he tried hard to contain his excitement. Who would he get? He had, had a mentor before, but the feeling right before the leader announced the pairing would never go away. He was a bit surprised and a little scared when Sliverheart was called. She was known to be a bit cranky and from what Nightpaw observed, didn't take to younger cats as well. He slowly got to his feet and walked over to the she-cat. He touched noses with his mentor before sitting down beside her. He hoped she was nicer in person. When the meeting was over, he turned to Sliverheart, waiting patiently for her orders.

Amberpaw almost burst forward when his name was called, he was so excited. When his mentor was chosen, however, he drooped a little - he had hoped that maybe be would get Dawnlight, who was way nicer - but he recovered quickly and bounded up to touch noses with his new mentor. He let out a little squeak when he did it too hard. When the meeting was over, Amberpaw launched into conversation immediately. "Hey Oaktail!" he said, all in a rush. "I can't wait to get started! I mean, it's been pretty boring since I haven't had a mentor, but I've been working on the stuff I've already been taught so I'm really good now. So, yeah, what're we gonna do first?"
Silverheart was surprised at Larkstar's choices - while Swiftstorm was not against Larkstar's point of view, both she and Oaktail were the most vocally against it. They would be educating the next generation of the Clan. This was a risky move on Larkstar's part, but Silverheart had gained a little respect for the she-cat. Gently, she touched noses with her new apprentice. He was a bit reckless, but he was a good cat and would make a fine warrior. As she sat next to the young tom, she eyed her sister with satisfaction for once. Dawnlight was the only warrior who hadn't gotten any assignments, which was a first. "We start immediately," she said simply when the ceremony was over, not quite looking at her apprentice. "What have you already learned?"
Dawnlight purred in congratulations at Swiftstorm when the ceremony was over. She was the right choice - she was a strong warrior and one of the most loyal in the Clan. Ignoring Silverheart's gaze, she decided to visit Tigerheart, to see if he was awake. She slipped into the den and glanced around.
