Jackson attempted to protest, but the Marquis kept speaking, so he stayed quiet. He managed not to flinch at the man's words, wanting to tell him the truth. His eyes moved to the man near the wall, watching as he stepped forward. Finally caving, he accepted the offer, taking the bag of coins. "Thank you, sir. Please tell her to stay safe," he said with a nod, retreating toward the door. He stopped short as the prince entered the dwelling, shaking his head. "No harm done." Jackson floundered slightly, wishing to leave, but the man was in his way. He opened his mouth to excuse himself, but the man began talking to the Marquis and it wasn't long before he was roped into the conversation, as well. He swallowed a sigh as the man turned toward him, giving him a slight smile as they were introduced. So he was the fiance, good-looking and well-built. It was obvious that he was royalty and ranked far above him in society. Here Jackson was, grungy and disheveled. How could he ever believe that he could compete with that? Jackson was drawn back to the conversation when Edward addressed him. "I appreciate the offer, sir, but this is no place for a man like me."

Edward chuckled at Jackson's words. "Smart man. Knows his place. Well, I think you can humor us and at least enjoy what little time you do get in a place like this," he said, placing a hand on the pirate's shoulder and guiding him further into the house. "Besides, I'm sure dear Alice would hate it if you left without saying goodbye. She's rather sentimental that way." He stopped talking as they entered the dining room, a grand table stretching down the middle intended to seat a party of people. Four places were set at one end, a fifth one being put in place by a servant. Although it was the Marquis's house, it seemed Edward had taken over things during his stay. The prince gestured for Jackson to take a seat at the place setting that had recently been set before he took his place at the head of the table. The Marquis sat on his left having followed them into the dining room. "The women should be out any moment," the prince said, glancing toward a servant at the side. "So Jackson, what is it you do?" He'd hardly asked the question when Alice and her godmother entered. The girl's appearance had completely changed from when she had first entered through the door. Her hair, still a little damp from her bath, was falling in curls down her shoulders, shiny after it finally got brushed by something other than her fingers. She was wearing a yellowish gold dress that complimented her hair and eyes and her godmother had powdered her face to hide her newly gained freckles. Edward brightened when he saw his future bride and he rose from his seat to greet her. "My sweet Alice," he greeted her, falling to one knee before her and kissing her hand. "I worried for you while you were gone." Looking down at her hand, he frowned and rose to his feet. "Your ring?" She glanced down at her hand and an apologetic look crossed her features. "I'm sorry, Edward. It was taken from me." He shook his head, giving her a rather forced smile. "No matter. I'm sure you have been through much since your kidnapping. Here." He led her to the seat beside Jackson and pulled her chair out, waiting for her to sit before taking his seat. Alice looked to Jackson, offering him a smile. "I'm glad you stayed. I was worried you might leave before I said goodbye."

Jackson stiffened at Edward's words, but kept his lips pressed together in a tight line. The words were dripping with condescension, and it took every muscle in Jackson's body to not retort. Instead, he chuckled and said tersely, "How kind of you."He didn’t like that the prince was touching him, and was grateful when he was released. He moved toward the table, taking a seat at the place that had just been set and murmuring a quiet “thank you” to the servant. He didn’t like that the man was taking the head of the table, feeling like the owner of the palace, and the more humble, Marquis should have the seat. Again, he kept his thoughts to himself. He was formulating a lie for the prince’s question when the women entered the room. Out of respect, Jackson got to his feet, offering them a courteous smile. He was a little stunned by the change in Alice’s appearance, raising his brows in the surprise. However, he didn’t like the make-up on her. It seemed unnatural. He managed not to roll his eyes at Edward’s dramatic gesture, studying the man. He didn’t seem genuine in anything he said. He didn’t seem as concerned as he should have been. If Jackson were in his shoes, he would have swept her into his arms and never let her go. Alas, that wasn’t his business. Jackson settled back into his seat once the women had sat down, glancing at Alice when she addressed him. “Believe me, I tried to leave,” he murmured with a soft laugh, turning his eyes back to his place setting.

Alice frowned at Jackson's response, a little hurt by his comment. He seemed eager to leave. Had any of the time they had spent together meant anything to him in any way at all? He could at least have the decency to give her a proper goodbye. Falling silent, she looked down at her plate before lifting her gaze when food was brought to the table. Dinner proceeded from there with gossip about politics and war. Alice's godmother turned the conversation to the wedding, which happened to be a week away, and Alice was drawn into the conversation, although she was her usual quiet self and only spoke minimally. When dinner was over, Alice accompanied Jackson to the door, finally alone with him. She looked up at him, still feeling like the rift that had come between them was very present. "Thank you," she murmured softly, giving him a smile. "For everything. I hope your journey goes well, wherever you end up next." She hesitated a moment before kissing his cheek. "Goodbye, Jackson." She pressed her lips together, looking down at the ground and shifting her feet slightly. It felt odd to say farewell to him.

Jackson glanced toward Alice, his smile fading as he realized he had sounded insensitive. Sighing softly, he focused on the meal that was placed in front of him, offering nothing to the conversation. He didn't know what to say and he didn't want to hear the wedding plans. When the meal was over, he trailed behind Alice, suddenly sad that they'd be parting ways. Stopping before her, he smiled at what she had to say, relishing the tentative kiss she gave him. As she looked down, he reached out to tuck a stray curl behind her ear. "Perhaps this isn't farewell," he murmured, gently grasping her face before he placed a kiss on her forehead. "Take care of yourself. Don't let anyone take your shoes without putting up a fight," he teased. He turned to leave, but stopped short, something weighing on his mind. He glanced back over his shoulder to see that they were alone before he turned back toward her. "Are...are you sure about him? About Prince Edward?" he asked softly.

Alice looked up when he spoke, smiling softly at his comment referring to her shoe incident. There wasn't any chance of something like that happening again, but at least he was making some sort of last minute effort to patch up what was left of their friendship that had formed throughout their journey. When he turned to leave, she let out a soft sigh and turned away as well, taking a few steps toward the stairwell. She stopped short at his question, squeezing her eyes shut and clenching her fists. Exhaling slowly, she nodded, not turning to look at him. "It is an honor to be marrying his highness," she said firmly, although her voice lacked some of the emotion it should have had. She continued her progression up the stairs, never looking back after that. She didn't want him to see her doubts. She didn't really have a say in the marriage anyway, so she had no place to doubt the engagement. Making her way to her bedroom, she noticed that the hallway seemed devoid of servants which was unusual at this time in the evening. She reached the door to her room and pulled it open, stepping inside and pulling it closed. She leaned back against the closed door, letting out a soft, sad sigh. She didn't like saying goodbye to Jackson. A movement caught her eye and she lifted her gaze, thinking it was her maid coming to help her undress. However, she froze in place when she saw who was really standing there, a vengeful look in his eye.
[This is where I figured I would dramatically set it up for Shane to make his return XD]

Jackson frowned slightly at her answer, letting out a soft breath. Something was off about her words, but he decided it would be better to stay silent. He was a little hurt that she never turned around, but he took that as his cue to depart. So he did, turning and making his way out of the grandiose building and heading slowly toward the front gate. Upstairs, Shane waited patiently for the heiress, her chambermaid dead at his feet, her throat slit. He had dispatched the other servants who had been so unlucky as to be upstairs, as well, their bodies now resting in a spare room. He was surprised at how easily he had gotten into the palace, considering the recent events of Alice's return. He couldn't wait to see the look on the girl's face when she saw him. This time, he would get things right. He would get his revenge against the people who had wronged him and he would make his brother pay. When the door opened, he brandished the bloodied knife, approaching the heiress and cracking a cruel smile. "Hello, dear Alice," he murmured, nearing her. "Don't scream now," be chuckled, twisting slightly so that she could see the gun pushed into the waist of his trousers. "It won't end well for you," he said quietly, twisting the knife in his hand. "I believe my brother was here, yes? Perhaps we should follow him. I have a few matters I'd like to discuss," he said as he gestured toward her balcony.
[Well that escalated quickly. XD]

[You are a mind reader XD]
Alice's eyes flicked from Shane to the dead maid and then back to Shane, swallowing slowly when she realized that he had every intention of killing her too. Despite how scared she was, the only visible sign of it was the quivering of her lip. If she had learned one thing on her previous adventure with the scoundrel of a pirate, it would be that it was best to remain calm and think through the situation rather than just succumbing to the fear and letting him do as he pleased. She clenched her jaw as he gestured to the window, making a wide arc around him to stay as far away as possible. Although Jackson had taught her a few basic self-defense techniques, she hardly believed in her abilities to handle the former captain. She saw that the ivy growing up the wall had provided a natural ladder leading to her window and she saw what he wanted her to do. Carefully, she climbed over the side of the balcony and made her way down the wall with much difficulty, the skirt of her dress constantly getting caught. When she reached the ground, she considered running, but she had a feeling the man could shoot her much faster than she could get away, so she slowly walked toward the drive, seeing Jackson through the leaves walking toward the end of her property. "Jackson," she called faintly, her voice quivering slightly with fear.
[Clearly I have no idea what I'm doing.]

[No, that works. XD]
Shane smiled at the way she skirted around him, risking a quick glance toward the door before he followed the woman to the balcony. He peered over the edge, watching as she climbed down before he swung a leg over the railing and followed. He dropped to the ground just after her, scowling when she called to his brother. Jackson, having heard Alice's voice, twisted around, his eyes scanning his surroundings. Shane took that moment to wrap a restraining arm around the heiress and hold his knife-weilding hand to her throat. He shoved them through the shrubbery, giving his brother a devilish grin. Jackson immediately saw the pair, frozen in place for a moment. He was startled to see that his brother had actually survived being thrown overboard, and even more surprised to see that he had already gotten his hands on Alice. Struck with concern for the young woman's well-being, he started to take a step toward the pair, but Shane pressed the knife a little more firmly against her throat. Jackson halted, splitting a glance between the pair. "Let her go, Shane," he snapped, glancing around for a soldier. "I wouldn't do that, Jacky," Shane taunted, "I can slit her throat faster than you can get help." Jackson turned his eyes back to his brother, a grim expression on his face. "Then take me instead," he said gruffly to the older man. "Oh, no, no. I plan on bringing you both with me. It'll be just like old times," he cooed, moving toward the other man, keeping a firm hold on Alice. "Where's the ship?" Jackson shook his head, "It's ten miles away. You'll be seen before we get there." Shane chuckled, turning his eyes to his captive, "I'm sure there are secret places to slip off your property, right, dear?" he asked as he stroked her clean.

Alice whimpered when Shane grabbed her, instinctively tipping her head back to avoid the sharp blade threatening her delicate throat. Her eyes fell on Jackson pleadingly, hoping he could somehow convince his brother to release her. She whimpered again as she felt the cold metal against her throat, trying to keep the tears at bay. He wasn't going to kill her yet; she didn't need to be afraid at the moment. She thought about how Jackson had held her similarly a few days ago, although this time it was the real feeling of adrenalin pumping through her veins. She couldn't do anything to escape without risking being hurt by the knife. His hold on her was too snug. She looked helplessly at Jackson, silently begging him to help her. There had to be something he could say or do. She flinched when Shane touched her, trying her best not to make any sounds of fear. "I don't know where Edward's soldiers are posted. But if you go through the east gardens, we should be covered. People rarely go to that side of the property."

Shane nodded at Alice's words, "Through the east gardens we go, then," he said with a broad smile. "But if you're lying, I will slit you from cheek to cheek," he murmured, pressing the blade closer to her throat. He nodded toward Jackson, "Walk ahead of us," he instructed. Jackson frowned, glancing toward Alice before he slowly did as he was told. Shane fell in behind the man as they trekked toward the gardens, glancing around warily. The coast seemed to be clear, so he headed on through, only instructing Jackson to stop when they were a good distance from the property. "Shane, just let her go," Jackson said stiffly, trying to persuade the man. Shane was quiet for a moment. Finally, he sheathed his knife and pulled out his revolver, pointing it toward Alice's head emphatically before he released the girl and shoved her forward. Jackson immediately enveloped Alice in a hug, holding her tightly and twisting away slightly so that Shane had a skewed view of her. "Either one of you tries to bolt, the other one gets shot," he said, "Now take me to the ship." He waved his gun, gesturing for them to start walking. Jackson hesitated before slowly starting to walk, an arm still slung around the heiress. About a mile in, he glanced down at her, "You can run. You should run. I'll keep him busy so you can get away," he said softly enough so that Shane couldn't hear him.

Alice walked awkwardly forward, restricted by her tight shoes and Shane's iron grip. When they reached the edge of her property, she sighed inwardly. She had hoped they would have run into a guard or a soldier, even though she had been honest when she said that this was the less populated area of the property. She felt the knife disappear and she sighed in relief, her shoulders falling. However, her relief was short lived at the sound of a click distinctive to a gun. But nothing happened and she was pushed forward roughly into Jackson's arms. She collapsed against him, holding onto him tightly and letting out a sob. Although she was scared, she felt better being in his arms. She knew that, even if it was just for a moment, she was safe there. They started walking and she clung tightly to the man, her fingers digging into his shirt where she gripped him. She was afraid, but at least she had him. When he told her to run, she shook her head. "No, I'm not leaving you. He'll kill you."

Jackson placed his hand over the one of hers that was gripping his shirt, "I'll be okay," he whispered. That was a lie; he had no idea what Shane would do. He could sound him or he could shoot him in the head. The man in question loped along behind them, still holding the gun. "Pipe down," he snapped, his voice angry. They walked for some time more before Jackson finally came to a stop. "She needs to rest, Shane. Let's take a break." Shane frowned, "Since when did you decide you could call the shots around here?" Jackson narrowed his eyes, "Since I threw you overboard," he said crisply. That did it. Shane aimed the weapon and shot Jackson in the shoulder, just above his collarbone. His brother inhaled sharply, thrown back slightly. The initial adrenaline rush wore down the pain, but it was still there. "Keep moving," Shane ordered.

Alice shook her head as he persisted in trying to get her to flee. She wouldn't run. She couldn't risk him getting hurt. She began to protest once more, although it died on her lips when Shane told them to be quiet. After a while, she was beginning to feel fatigued from the combination of the exertion, the heat, and her restricted breathing with the corset. Sweat was beading at her hairline and her breathing was starting to get heavier as they trudged on. She was relieved when Jackson stopped, although she was about to insist that he keep going to appease Shane when he spoke. "I'm really alright," she said, although her words were drowned out by Shane's question. "Please, can we keep going?" she said, trying in vain to calm things down before they escalated. They were too focused on each other to hear her soft voice. "Jackson, please st-" she started to say when he spoke, only to be cut off by the sound of the gun. She jumped, a squeak escaping her lips when she saw the blood blooming from Jackson's shoulder. "Oh my God," she whimpered, her hands going to her mouth before hesitantly going to Jackson's shoulder. She didn't know what to do. At Shane's order she turned to him in disbelief, tears already spilling out of her eyes. "He can't go on like that!" she cried, her tone pleading with him to be reasonable. She straightened as the gun was pointed threateningly once more and she sobbed. "Please don't. We'll go." She turned away from the cruel pirate, taking Jackson's uninjured arm to prompt him forward. They had no choice but to move. She was openly crying now, unable to combat the fear she had been trying so hard to suppress.

[> ] Jackson shook his head as Alice went to touch his shoulder, giving her a pained smile, "I'm okay, I promise," he murmured, glancing toward Shane. The man scowled when she protested, turning the gun toward her until she agreed to start moving again. Shane smiled, moving along behind them. Jackson glanced down as the heiress took his good arm to guide him along, working his hand into hers and weaving their fingers together. He squeezed her hand gently, ignoring the acute throb in his shoulder. He already had a bullet wound in his other shoulder, still fairly fresh, and though the rest of him was mainly healed, his body was still sore in some parts from the beating he'd received. He was just tired. They walked in silence for another hour and a half before Shane finally told them to stop, gesturing toward a dilapidated barn at the edge of someone's property. "We can stay in there for tonight." Jackson sighed at the man, but did as he was told, too exhausted to argue. Fresh-looking hay lined one wall, but there were no signs that any animals were living in there. Jackson meandered toward a hay bale and sat down heavily.

Alice looked down when she felt Jackson's hand in hers, returning his squeeze. She was comforted by the gesture, although it hardly took away from the gravity of the situation. By the time they reached the barn, she was exhausted. Her feet hurt from the long walk and her chest hurt from being unable to breathe properly. She was relieved that Shane was allowing them to stop. Walking inside, she looked around at the rather empty space. The hay bales looked enticing and Alice sat down beside Jackson, letting out an exhausted sigh. She looked up at him, worry creasing her forehead. "Is there anything I can do to help it?" she asked, her eyes falling to the red stain on his shirt.

Jackson shook his head stiffly at Alice's question, letting out a sharp sigh, "No, not really," he murmured. He, too, looked to his shoulder, his tunic soaked with his own blood. He hoped it would clot soon. With a sigh, he glanced toward the heiress, "Are you okay?" Shane was at the barn door, keeping an eye out, so for the moment, he was occupied.
