[Hmm...]
After the heiress had retreated downstairs, the naval vessel pulled up beside the pirate ship, its sails pulled up so it would fall in line with the other ship and maintain the same speed. On board, the commanding officer stood with arms crossed, a handful of soldiers kneeling with their bayonets directed at the deck of the pirate ship. Below deck, the cannons were poised for fire. "What is your purpose in these waters?" the officer shouted across the gap, eyeing the pirate crew.

Jackson stood tall as the naval boat came up beside their ship, his crew standing beside him. He smiled at the guns pointed toward them, folding his hands behind his back. Laughing out loud at the captain's question, he shrugged, "What gives you the right to question? My matters are my own." He cleared his throat, tilting toward them, "But if it'll put you at ease, we have business to attend to. One of our men died. We've come to inform his family." He smiled jovially, "So, if you're done posturing, we'd like to be on our way."

The commanding officer raised his hand and the men on deck lowered their weapons, although the cannons remained poised to attack. "We apologize for the intimidation but there has been trouble recently. The only child of the Marquis was kidnapped by pirates and this area is under lockdown." He gestured toward one of his men, who lowered a gangplank across the ships. "We have orders to search every ship for Lady Langley, so please excuse us." A few soldiers and the officer crossed over. He approached Jackson, giving him a friendly smile. "May I see your merchant permit? We're required to check."

Jackson played his part well, nodding his head sympathetically, "Ah, what a tragedy." His eyes drifted toward the gangplank as it was set down, and he sauntered over. "Yes, please. Come aboard. Refreshments are down that-a-way," he said sarcastically, gesturing toward the bow. He folded his arms over his chest as the men boarded his ship, eyeing the officer when he approached. "Might I see your papers, kind sir? How do I know that you are, in fact, an officer?" With a slight eyeroll, Jackson pulled a leather-bound notebook from his pocket, flipping it open and handing it over. He had kept it with him for the past several years, as Shane had had the bad habit of losing the forged papers.

"All right, all right, smart ass," the man remarked, taking the notebook and glancing over the papers before handing them back. "Thank you for your cooperation, we'll do a quick comb of the ship and then we'll be out of your hair." He signaled for the men to go, and they did a quick walkthrough of the upper deck before descending below deck. They combed through every room and the commanding officer was the one to open the door to Alice's room. She looked up when they stepped in, relief washing through her. They had come for her. The commander's face lit up at the sight of the woman. She matched the description they had been given perfectly, although it was odd she was dressed in men's clothing. "Excuse me, miss, sorry to barge in," he said politely. "May I inquire as to who you are?"

Jackson gave a cocky grin at the man's comment, taking the papers as they were handed back to him. He raised a brow, "Was that a pun, officer?" he chuckled, trailing behind the small group as they inspected his ship. Whistling as they moved below deck, he glanced around with the men, making comments on his cargo as it was searched. He caught sight of the captain heading toward the small room Alice was in, moving toward him casually. He leaned against the doorway as the man spoke, glancing in at the heiress. "This is Elizabeth. We were providing her passage from the next town over," he chimed in. Pausing, he raised his hands, "I'm sure you want to hear that from her, though." He gave the man a sheepish smile, "I realize we don't really have the correct papers to transport her, but I hope you might be able to overlook this small fine."

Alice looked over at Jackson when he lied to the officer, confused. Why wouldn't they just willingly give her back so she could go home and be out of their hair quicker? She hesitated a moment as the two men looked at her, waiting for her to speak. Jackson obviously wanted her to lie but revealing who she really was would reduce his troubles. But he hadn't done anything to make her question him so far, so she decided to follow his lead. "Um, yes. My name is Elizabeth...Butcher. I'm sorry to cause any trouble, I was just eager to get home and he offered me a cheaper ride than a passenger ship." She was a terrible liar and she hoped that her half-truth would suffice. The officer studied her a moment before giving her a smile. "I don't see the problem. If you hear of an Alice Langley anywhere, be sure to report it to the authorities. Her father misses her dearly." Alice's eyes widened slightly at what he said, providing him with all of the information he needed. His men returned at that moment, reporting that the rest of the ship was clear. "Well, it looks like everything is good here. Thank you for your patience and sorry to delay your return home." He gestured for his soldiers to follow, returning to the top deck and crossing the gangplank to his ship. He immediately went to his lieutenant, who nodded at what he told him, turning toward their men. "Fire!" he yelled, sending a barrage of bullets and cannonballs at the ship. The commander had seen right through Alice's lie, her hesitation and body language giving them away. He would damage the ship sufficiently and then retrieve her and return her to safety.

Jackson tensed slightly at how terribly Alice lied, knowing that the officer saw right through their facade. He turned his focus to the heiress as the other man spoke, wondering why he wasn't arresting everyone on the ship yet. However, when he saw the expression on the woman's face, he knew that their little ruse wasn't going to be successful. Jackson gave a brief nod when the officer addressed him, watching the small group ascend the stairs before he turned and slammed his fist into the wall. "Dammit!" He let out a short breath and turned to Alice, "They know. Can't you afford theater classes with your masses of wealth?!" he groaned. At that moment, cannonballs began to rip through the wall very near them, a few bullets piercing the wood over their heads. Jackson immediately reached out to grab Alice, pulling her in against his body and twisting around so that any shrapnel would hit him instead of her. He guided her toward the opposite side just as a stray bullet sunk into his shoulder. He faltered slightly at the impact, flinching in pain. Moving quickly, he led her to the stairs and up to the top deck. The crew was taking cover and Jackson hastily waved an arm at the naval boat, gesturing toward the heiress. When the barrage stopped, he cast a quick glance at Alice. "Are you okay?" he asked as he gave her a once over to ensure that she was uninjured. He slowly turned back to the naval boat, "We have Lady Langley, hold your fire!" he called. Heaving a sigh, he put one foot in front of the other and guided her to the side of the boat. "They'll take you home. Take care, Alice," he murmured. When they reached the railing, he helped her up onto the unharmed gangplank, giving her a small nod.

Alice winced as Jackson snapped at her, turning away. It wasn't her fault she was a bad liar, she just had a good moral compass. Before she could say anything in her defense, there was a loud explosion and she screamed as the wood splintered around her. She hardly realized Jackson had grabbed her until she was moving without willing herself to. She was shaking at the sudden chaos all around them and when they were at the top of the deck, she huddled closer to Jackson as the firing stopped. She nodded at his inquiry of her physical condition, although a stray piece of wood had sliced her cheek open. When Jackson revealed her identity to the British officers, she suddenly felt uncertain. They had attacked the ship without needing to. She still walked in the direction Jackson guided her, although she paused as her feet touched the gangplank. "Glad you decided to surrender, pirates," the commander said with a satisfied smile, holding his hand out to the heiress. She glanced behind her at Jackson and then shifted her gaze in front of her, seeing how the soldiers still had their bayonets pointed at the crew. "You can't harm them," she said, staying where she was. "You know we must follow orders, milady. They're pirates. They must pay for their sins." She frowned. "They're good men." The commander laughed. "Good men? They steal and cheat and murder. They pulled you out of your bed in the middle of the night. You can't have grown attached to them after all they've done to you." A look of determination set onto Alice's face and she crossed her arms. "Either you let them go or I won't come with you." The commander looked taken aback at her ultimatum. "Lady Langley, they're manipulating you. They don't care about you, just the money you can give them." Glancing behind him, he scowled at one of his men. "Take the Captain out, damn it!" Alice hopped down from the railing and flung her arms out, standing in front of Jackson like a shield. The man aiming at Jackson couldn't get a clear shot and he huffed in frustration. "It's not possible without hurting her, sir." The commander, growing frustrated, turned back to the heiress. "We cannot allow them to go freely." Alice raised an eyebrow, crossing her arms again. "Then I guess you won't be reaping the rewards of my return." She turned to Jackson, offering him a reassuring smile. "Get the boat moving, they won't harm you."

Jackson had hardly released Alice's hand when the commander spoke snidely to his crew, irritated. He glared at the man, his earlier smart ass sense of humor gone. Casting a quick glance toward the heiress, he gave her another slight nod, ensuring her that it was alright for her to cross. He and the rest of the crew all held the same shocked expression when Alice spoke up on their behalf. Jackson followed the conversation tensely, uncomfortable with what the commander was accusing them of. Yes, most of it was true, but he was trying to do the right thing here. "Alice, it's alright. We'll be alright," he said quietly from behind, reaching up to touch her hand just as the lieutenant demanded that he be shot. He tensed, not unaccustomed to the pain of a bullet. When Alice leapt down in front of him, he was startled, taken aback that she was protecting him. He raised his brows as she talked back to the commander, still staring at her when she turned to face him. Smiling at her words, Jackson motioned for his men to pick up the pace, his eyes still on the heiress. As the crew hastily dropped the sails to catch the full force of the wind, Jackson cupped Alice's face to pull her forward and press a kiss to her forehead. "That was brave. Didn't think you had it in you, heiress," he chuckled, pulling away to smile at her. The other men loudly called their appreciation as they guided the wounded boat ** at an angle away from her home. The ship's navigator came running up to the pair, "It's not safe enough to dock here, but the ship isn't in the best condition to travel. We might be able to make it to the next town over, but it's thirty-five miles away." Jackson glanced toward the docks of Alice's small town, which was quickly shrinking as they moved away from it. It looked like there were several navy boats and foot soldiers milling about. Muttering a curse, Jackson turned back toward the navigator and waved him on, the man nodding and running off. With a sigh, the captain turned back toward Alice, "I'm sorry, Lady Langley. It's just not safe enough. I have to think about my crew, as well. As soon as you left, they would have strung us from the highest tree. We'll sail in a different way next time. My promise is still true." He offered her a smile before going to help his men guide their ship to safety. The sun was dipping below the horizon when they set anchor and tied on at the docks if the next town, the waters calm around them. Jackson made his way over to the young woman, having hardly remembered the bullet in his shoulder. The rest of him was still bruised and battered, so it really just faded in. He helped her off the ship, immediately noticing broken glass and wood from cargo crates being dropped. Casting a quick glance toward Alice's bare feet, he wrapped his arms around her waist and hips, lifting her up so that she was parallel with him, but her head was above his. "I'll get you a room and meal first, then we can go buy you some legitimate clothing." He glanced up at her with a smile, carrying her toward a lodge. As he had the first time, he introduced her as his wife and requested hot water for their bath. After paying, he led her their room, and the water was brought up a few minutes later. When the bath was filled, he gently grabbed her hand and led her to it, grabbing a small cloth. He dipped the material in the water to dampen it before turning to the heiress and lightly dabbing at her wounded cheek. Chuckling slightly when he was finished, he tilted his head, "It makes you look interesting," he said with a smile. Gesturing toward the water, he said, "Go ahead and clean up. I'll be in the other room." He headed for the bed and sat down, exhausted.

[Wait! They need to dock at a different town. This would just end the story. They need more time to get attached to each other. Then they can return her home. Then Shane can kidnap her again. Then they rescue her. Then Jackson meets fiancée. Boom.]

"Me either." Alice let out a shaky sigh at his comment, her smile weakening. She was shaking all over from nerves, shocked herself that she had been so brave. Her bravery could only go so far and it had taken a lot to stand up to the Naval officers like that. She turned to look at them as they sailed away, noting the way they glared at her. She was going to get some trouble for it when she got home, but at least they knew that these pirates were given asylum by her. She would protect them as Jackson had protected her. When she was told she wouldn't be returning home quite yet, she nodded in understanding. She wouldn't want her efforts to protect them to be for naught, so she could handle being with them a little longer. She moved to the edge of the boat and leaned against the railing, watching the sunset. When Jackson approached her again, squeaking softly as he lifted her. Looking down at the ground, she noticed that there was all sorts of debris that could hurt her feet and she appreciated how thoughtful he was, relaxing into his grip. "Thank you," she said, smiling down at him. She was quiet as he got them a room and sighed in relief when they had a quiet moment to themselves. It had been a long day. She looked up at him curiously as he led her toward the bathtub, watching as he dampened a cloth and lifted it to her face. She winced at the sting, trying to hold still as he cleaned her cheek. She hadn't realized she had been wounded and she sighed at his comment. "My godmother will be unhappy if it scars," she told him, touching her cheek lightly with her fingertips. She nodded as he told her to bathe, doing as he said and stripping down to get into the hot water. She didn't worry about him looking this time, expecting him to be a gentleman now. She sighed softly in contentment as the water eased her tense muscles, relaxing her. She got to work cleaning up and then got dressed, stepping into the bedroom. A frown crossed her lips when she noticed the blood soaked through his shoulder and she sat on the bed beside him, lightly touching his shoulder. "Are you okay?" she asked, worried that he was more seriously injured than he let on.

Jackson leaned forward, resting his elbows on his knees as Alice bathed. He hung his head between his shoulders, letting out a long, slow breath. He was tense and exhausted, the stresses of the last week weighing heavily on him. His eyes were drifting toward the heiress without him really noticing and he was soon taking in the soft curve of her neck and the way her dark hair fell over her shoulders. Slowly straightening up, he pressed his hands into the mattress and leaned back. It wasn't until she stood up to get out that he realized he was staring, and he shamefully dropped his eyes, feeling guilty about breaching her privacy. He kept his eyes glued to the floor until she joined him, lifting his head when she sat down beside him. At her words, he glanced down at his shoulder, "Oh, it's probably fine. I don't even feel it. I'm going to go clean up." He got to his feet, before pausing on second thought and pulling off the small bag of coins at his hip. Offering her the bag, he smiled, "Go get something to eat. I'll join you in a little bit." Once she took the coin purse, he headed toward the tub, pulling off his clothes wearily and flinching as his shirt tugged at his bullet wound. He slipped beneath the water a moment later, allowing its warmth to soothe him. After washing off, he cleaned his shoulder as best as he could before he got dried off and dressed. Feeling better, he headed out of the room and down to the lower level, spotting Alice and taking a seat beside her.

Alice didn't quite believe him but she let it go and took the money, getting to her feet. She went downstairs and found herself a table, ordering stew for both of them. A good hearty meal would help him feel better. When he arrived, she smiled at him, gesturing at his bowl on the table. "I just went ahead and ordered for you. I figured you would rather eat now than wait." She tucked her damp hair behind her ear, starting on her food ravenously, although she maintained her poise as a lady. She'd waited until he'd arrived to eat and just starting at the food had caused her stomach to rumble loudly. Satisfied after eating most of her meal, she turned toward the captain and handed him the coin purse back. "Thank you."

Jackson's lips titled into a smile when Alice told him she had ordered for them both, giving her an appreciative nod, "Thank you." He watched her for a moment, chuckling at how swiftly she ate, impressed at the ladylike way she did so. Dropping his eyes to his own bowl, he began to eat just as hungrily, his aching body grateful for the sustinance. Finishing just before she did, he stretched slightly, turning toward the heiress when she offered him his coins back. "It's the least I can do," he murmured, taking the bag and reattaching it to his belt. Getting to his feet, he offered her his hand to help her up before leading her to the door. "Let's see if we can find some decent clothes," he said as he headed out into the street. After meandering for a few minutes, he found a small shop that sold various tunics and trousers, along with boots and several other types of shoes. Glancing at Alice, he headed inside, grabbing a few new sets of clothes for himself. "Sorry they don't have fancy ball gowns and expensive slippers," he chuckled, waiting for her to choose something.

Alice took his offered hand and got to her feet, following him out the door. She looked about as they walked, taking in the small town and all of its people haunting the streets after the sun set. Her attention was drawn away from her people watching as Jackson led her into a clothing shop, her nose wrinkling slightly when she realized it was all men's clothing. Well, she couldn't say she disliked pants; they were helpful when the wind was blowing on deck. She did, however, wish to feel like a woman and not a boy. She didn't complain outwardly, instead looking through her options for something her size. She found a tunic in their smallest size, which was still baggy and failed to reveal any of her womanly form. She found trousers that fit, although they were a bit long and had to be rolled up at the bottom. And she finally found shoes to fit her petite feet, although they were boy sized. She stepped out of the changing room and gave a little twirl, satisfied with the way the clothes stayed on and gave her more freedom of movement. She walked up to Jackson, giving him an appreciative smile. "Thank you, this is much better."

Jackson laughed when Alice twirled out of the small room, "Very nice, very nice." He shrugged at her thanks and headed up to the shopkeeper to pay for their items, ignoring the strange look that the man gave the heiress. Once that was done, he led her back to the lodge and up to their room. He stepped into the partially-private bath area and pulled off his clothes to change into the fresh ones he had just bought. His shoulder smarted in protest, but he ignored it and pulled on his tunic anyway. When he was dressed but barefoot, he headed back into the bedroom and grabbed a pillow and blanket off the bed, unaware that his fresh wound was bleeding through his shirt. "I'll take the floor," he murmured as he laid out a makeshift bed. He sat down, glancing up at the woman, "You're free to run off, but if you do, avoid the police," he said seriously before cracking a playful smile.
